From golf outings and social events to a continued emphasis on retention, Rotary clubs around the world are finding creative ways to respond to President Dong Kurn Lee's challenge to increase membership.

August is Membership and Extension month, a time to focus on the heart of Rotary and what makes it great -- more than 1.2 million members in nearly 33,000 clubs worldwide.

As RI president, Lee has challenged Rotary districts and clubs this year to a net membership increase of 10 percent and to add two new clubs in each district. New clubs are a means of reaching demographic groups that cannot get involved in current club meetings.

"If we do not bring in younger members, we will miss out on a great deal of energy and expertise," Lee said during a visit to the Rotary Club of Chicago in early July. "And we will not be providing a new generation of members to become club presidents, district governors, and senior RI leaders in the years to come."

In seeking to recruite new members, clubs should look to new enterprises, professions and occupations, such as web developers or technicians, that may have been previously overlooked, Lee urged.

Two clubs in Korea have been experiencing great success in membership growth. The Rotary Club of Gwangju-Ibseog in Gwangju, Korea, nearly doubled its membership in the 2007-08 year, and the Rotary Club of Iri Dong in Jeonrabug grew from 112 to 152 members last year.

Governors-elect training seminars and Rotary zone institutes begin this month

Governors-elect training seminars (GETS) take place August to December in conjunction with Rotary zone institutes. GETS prepares the incoming class of RI district governors to successfully lead their district, and allow governors-elect to discuss effective strategies in their part of the Rotary world.

Other training meetings held in conjunction with Rotary zone institutes may include programs for governor-elect partners, governors-nominee, or district trainers. Rotary zone institutes often include a regional Rotary Foundation seminar and a zone-level membership seminar. To find out when your GETS and Rotary zone institutes will be held, check the schedule .

El Comité de Propuestas para Presidente de RI seleccionó a Ray Klinginsmith, socio del Club Rotario de Kirksville, Missouri, EE.UU., como candidato a presidente de RI de 2010-2011. Si no se presentan contendientes, el 1 de octubre será el presidente propuesto de RI.

Klinginsmith se graduó de Administración de Empresas y Derecho en la University of Missouri y cursó estudios de posgrado en la University of Cape Town, Sudáfrica, como Becario de Buena Voluntad de la Fundación. Fue consejero general y dictó cátedra en la Northeast Missouri State University, en Kirksville, de 1973 a 1995, año en que se jubiló. Además, durante cinco años fue decano administrativo del mismo centro de estudios.

En la actualidad a cargo de su propio bufete jurídico, Klinginsmith fue comisionado electo de condado entre 2001 y 2004. Desde 1971 preside el Macon Atlanta State Bank y desde 1982, la Chariton Valley Association for Handicapped Citizens. Junto con su esposa Judie tiene dos hijos y tres nietos.

Se le ha conferido la Citación por Servicios Meritorios y el Premio por Servicios Distinguidos de La Fundación Rotaria. Además, es contribuyente de donaciones extraordinarias.

Asimismo, Klinginsmith se ha ganado diversas distinciones en el ámbito local y regional, incluido el Parent/Caretaker Award del Consejo de Planificación de Discapacidad del Desarrollo de Missouri, el Thomas D. Cochran Award for Community Service, el premio estatal anual del Sector de Abogados Jóvenes del Colegio de Abogados de Missouri; el Premio Silver Beaver del Great Rivers Council de Boy Scouts of America, entidad de la cual es ex integrante de la junta directiva.

Klinginsmith is choice for 2010-11 RI president

Ray Klinginsmith of the Rotary Club of Kirksville, Missouri, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2010-11. Klinginsmith will become the president-nominee on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates.

Klinginsmith earned degrees in business and law at the University of Missouri and completed graduate studies at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, as a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar. He was general counsel and professor of business at Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville (now Truman State University) from 1973 until his retirement in 1995, and also held the post of dean of administration for five years.

Klinginsmith, who now operates a law office, served as an elected county commissioner from 2001 to 2004. He has been a director of the Macon Atlanta State Bank since 1971 and president of the Chariton Valley Association for Handicapped Citizens since 1982. He and his wife, Judie, have two children and three grandchildren.

A Rotarian since 1961, Klinginsmith has served Rotary as district governor and as chair of the 1998 Council of Legislation in New Delhi and the 2008 Los Angeles Convention Committee. He was a member of the RI Board of Directors for 1985-87 and chaired its executive committee in 1986-87. Klinginsmith joined The Rotary Foundation Trustees in 2002, serving as vice chair in 2005-06, and was a member of the Future Vision Committee from 2005 to 2008. Klinginsmith, a Major Donor, is a recipient of the Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award.

In addition, Klinginsmith has earned many honors in his community, including the Parent/Caretaker Award from the Missouri Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities; the Thomas D. Cochran Award for Community Service, an annual statewide award by the Young Lawyers Section of the Missouri Bar; and the Silver Beaver Award from the Great Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America, of which he is a former member of the executive board.

Klinginsmith believes that Rotary’s best days are still ahead.

"The reputation and ability of Rotarians to impact the world positively is better than ever, and the future of Rotary is bright," he says. "The RI Strategic Plan and The Rotary Foundation Future Vision Plan are good roadmaps to the future. However, the decisions about the selection of strategic partners, the recruitment of younger members, and the facilitation of district change to enable younger leaders to serve as district governors will continue to require leaders of uncommon vision and wisdom."

RI Public Relations Award discontinued

The RI Board of Directors voted in June to discontinue the RI Public Relations Award as of 1 July, 2008.

Rotary clubs that wish to be recognized for public relations may be able to use their outreach efforts to qualify for the Presidential Citation. To earn the citation, Rotary clubs must complete activities in six categories, including community service. One way of completing the community service activity is to promote Rotary to the general public by placing a public service announcement.

Public Relations Grants are still available.

The submission information for the RI Public Relations Award published in the July 2008 issue of Rotary World should be disregarded. Rotary World editors apologize for the confusion.

En su reunión de junio, la Directiva decidió discontinuar el Premio de Relaciones Públicas de RI a partir del 1 de julio de 2008.

Los clubes rotarios que deseen obtener reconocimiento por sus actividades de relaciones públicas podrán aspirar a la Mención Presidencial, la cual puede lograrse desarrollando actividades en seis categorías, incluido el Servicio en la Comunidad. Entre este tipo de actividades puede incluirse la promoción de Rotary ante el público en general mediante un anuncio de servicio público.

Aún pueden solicitarse los Subsidios para Relaciones Públicas.

Seminario en Guatemala

Con la presencia del Coordinador Regional de Desarrollo del Cuadro Social, José Adolfo Herrera y el Director de RI, José Alfredo Sepúlveda, fue celebrado en el día de ayer 9 de Agosto el Seminario Distrital de Desarollo del Cuadro Social en la ciudad de Guatemala para todo el Distrito 4250.

Al evento asistió un centenar de rotarios entre los que se destacan el Gobernador del distrito Rodolfo Bianchi y el Pasado Director de R.I., Lusi Felipe Valenzuela, de Honduras asistieron de igual forma una gran cantidad de rotarios, Dario, Luis Reyes, entre otros.

Se realizó un FODA para la membrecía, y se trataron temas tales como: Las Clasificaciones y la Extensión, La Formación Rotaria, La Prueba Cuádruple, Ingresos de nuevos socios, Talleres sobre FODA y la Retención de Socios, Compañerismo y otros.

El seminario tuvo un día completo de duración, terminando con una sesión de preguntas y respuestas.

Felicitamos sinceramente a Rodolfo y todo su equipo por el rotundo éxito de tan importante evento, a la vez que le agredecemos todas las atenciones recibidas en estos dos días en esta hermosa tierra.

Rotary’s official mottoes, Service Above Self and They Profit Most Who Serve Best, trace back to the early days of the organization.

In 1911, He Profits Most Who Serves Best was approved as the Rotary motto at the second convention of the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America, in Portland, Oregon. It was adapted from a speech made by Rotarian Arthur Frederick Sheldon to the first convention, held in Chicago the previous year. Sheldon declared that "only the science of right conduct toward others pays. Business is the science of human services. He profits most who serves his fellows best." The Portland convention also inspired the motto Service Above Self. During a convention outing on the Columbia River, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, talked with Seattle Rotarian J.E. Pinkham about the proper way to organize a Rotary club, offering the principle his club had adopted: Service, Not Self. Pinkham invited Paul P. Harris, who also was on the boat trip, to join their conversation. Harris asked Collins to address the convention, and the phrase Service, Not Self was met with great enthusiasm.

At the 1950 RI Convention in Detroit, slightly modified versions of the two slogans were formally approved as the official mot­toes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary, because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. He Profits Most Who Serves Best was modified by the 2004 Council to its current wording, They Profit Most Who Serve Best.

El Lado Positivo del Cambio:

En los últimos 25 años, los rotarios multiplicaron sus actividades gracias a La Fundación Rotaria, que nos ha permitido encauzar nuestras contribuciones hacia donde más se necesitan. Nuestra Fundación ha crecido. Desarrollamos nuevos programas, actualizamos algunos y eliminamos otros; sin embargo, la forma en que La Fundación distribuye los fondos y el tipo de proyectos mantienen mantienen su esencia.

En años recientes, numerosos rotarios cuestionaron nuestros procedimientos. Otros piensan que la labor humanitaria de Rotary no capta la atención que merece del público. El Plan para la Visión Futura de La Fundación Rotaria nos ofrece una solución para simplificar sus procesos y concentrarnos en los proyectos donde podemos influir más.

Este plan requiere de cambios en el enfoque de nuestros proyectos, la distribución de fondos y nuestra cultura. Esto último presenta un mayor reto que retocar la estética de nuestros programas y procedimientos. Toda organizacion que se oponga al cambio e imposibilite su crecimiento, deja de ser una fuerza propulsora y queda relegada al olvido.

La Fundación Rotaria vive un momento crucial. Gracias a la iniciativa Mundial para la Erradicación de la Polio, hemos obtenido reconocimineto internacional. Aprovechemos esta oportunidad para aumentar la eficacia de nuestra Fundación y mejorar su imagen.

The Service Above Self Award is Rotary's highest honor for individual Rotarians, recognizing those who have displayed exemplary humanitarian service with a focus on active involvement in helping others through Rotary. Each year, current and immediate past district governors and current and past RI directors may submit up to three nominations for this award. Nominations must arrive at RI World Headquarters by 1 September, and after all nominations are reviewed, the RI Board selects a maximum of 150 Rotarians to receive the award.

Estimados compañeros rotarios:

Este año nos hemos fijado una meta ambiciosa: Hacer Realidad los Sueños de todos los niños del mundo reduciendo la mortalidad infantil. Creo que, si concentramos nuestros esfuerzos y trabajamos mancomunados, podemos alcanzar esta meta. Pero también sé que, al finalizar este año, quedará mucho por hacer para llevar salud y esperanza a todos los niños del mundo.

Para que podamos reducir la mortalidad infantil en el presente año rotario y en muchos más por venir, se necesitan rotarios que lo hagan. Todo proyecto de agua potable, salud y lucha contra el hambre, y alfabetización que implementamos ayuda a crear un mundo mejor. Cada proyecto ayuda a cambiar el mundo, una pequeña porción a la vez.

Y cada proyecto requiere rotarios capaces y solidarios.

Cada nuevo rotario que instalamos en nuestros clubes colabora para Hacer los Sueños Realidad . Es por ello que este año pido a los rotarios de todo el mundo que persigan metas osadas respecto al cuadro social: primera, incrementar el número de socios en un 10%, y, segundo, crear dos clubes nuevos por distrito.

Al igual que reducir la mortalidad infantil, éstas son metas ambiciosas que podemos alcanzar si nos mentalizamos al respecto. Si buscamos rotarios sólo entre nuestros familiares y amigos, podremos no hallar suficientes socios potenciales cualificados. Pero si nos dirigimos a los líderes comunitarios que ejercen una profesión diferente, o pertenecen a otra generación, hallaremos muchos rotarios en potencia.

Es natural que deseemos invitar a nuestros clubes personas como nosotros, pero ello limita la diversidad y el talento de cada club. Debemos atraer a personas jóvenes a nuestros clubes o de lo contrario no sólo perderemos una importante fuente de energía y experiencia, sino que, además, no cumpliremos el deber que tenemos hacia nuestra organización de capacitar a la próxima generación de presidentes de club, gobernadores de distrito y dirigentes principales de RI.

Recuerden: el cuadro social es responsabilidad de todos. Cada uno de nosotros tiene la obligación de mantener a Rotary sólido, activo y en crecimiento. Si esperamos Hacer Realidad los Sueños de los niños del mundo de un modo significativo y perdurable, debemos cerciorarnos de que una nueva generación de rotarios continúe nuestra labor.

Dear fellow Rotarians,

This year, we have set ourselves an ambitious goal: to Make Dreams Real for the world’s children by reducing child mortality. I believe we can achieve this goal, if we focus our efforts and work together. But I also know that at the end of this year, there will be a great deal left for us to do to bring health and hope to all of the world’s children.

If we are to reduce child mortality, in this Rotary year and for many years to come, we need to have Rotarians to do it. Every project we do in water, health and hunger, and literacy helps create a better world. Every project helps change the world, a little bit at a time.
And every project needs caring and capable Rotarians.

Each new Rotarian we bring into our clubs helps to Make Dreams Real . That is why, this year, I am asking Rotarians everywhere to meet bold membership goals: first, to increase membership by 10 percent and, second, to create two new clubs per district.

Like the goal of reducing child mortality, these are ambitious goals that we can achieve – if we set our minds to them. If we look for new Rotarians only among our friends and family, we may not be able to find enough qualified new members. But if we reach out to community leaders who are of a different profession, or a different generation, we will find many potential Rotarians.
It is natural to want to invite people into our clubs who are like ourselves, but that limits the diversity and talent of each club. We must welcome younger members to our clubs, or we will have not only lost an important source of energy and expertise but also failed in our duty to our organization to train the next generation of club presidents, district governors, and senior RI leaders.

Remember: Membership is the responsibility of each of us. Every one of us has an obligation to keep Rotary strong, active, and growing. If we hope to Make Dreams Real for the world’s children in a meaningful and lasting way, we must ensure a new generation of Rotarians to continue our work.

Resoluciones para el nuevo año

Unámonos para cumplir el Desafío de Rotary

Estimada Familia de Rotary:

Independientemente del lugar donde vivamos, la polio constituirá una amenaza constante para todo el planeta hasta que no logremos la erradicación definitiva. Es por ello que cada comunidad –y cada club rotario– debe asumir el compromiso de eliminar este flagelo de una vez y para siempre.

El principal obstáculo para lograr nuestra meta es la falta de fondos. Por ello, el apoyo de todos los clubes es vital para dar cumplimiento al compromiso asumido por Rotary de equiparar la subvención-desafío por 100 millones de dólares que nos otorgara la Fundación Bill y Melinda Gates.

Exhorto a cada club rotario a aportar un mínimo de 1.000 dólares por año durante los próximos tres años y a poner en marcha estrategias creativas de recaudación de fondos en la comunidad con el objetivo de erradicar la polio. Algunos clubes de Estados Unidos han llevado a cabo subastas en vivo o a través de Internet (servicios de reparaciones en el hogar, publicidad radial, piezas de arte, cruceros, etc.). Varios clubes de Canadá patrocinan la travesía en bicicleta que realiza un sobreviviente de polio, recorriendo más de 2.000 km de territorio canadiense, y el 75% del importe que se recaude se destinará al programa PolioPlus. Asimismo, nos enteramos de que los rotarios escoceses procuraban batir un récord mundial: la mayor cantidad de jugadores en finalizar un circuito completo en un campo de golf en sólo 24 horas. Es posible que al momento de redactar estas palabras, ya hayan batido dicho récord y obtenido un excelente hándicap para la erradicación de la polio.

En www.rotary.org encontrarán más ideas para recaudar fondos. Aprovechemos este magnífico impulso a fin de cumplir el desafío de Rotary y la promesa que hiciéramos a todos los niños del mundo.
