What can you do to increase club membership?

Rotary International News
2 December 2009

Have a supply of Start with Rotary postcards to hand out to potential members. When it comes to recruiting club members, there are almost as many ideas as there are Rotarians, which is not surprising considering Rotary's diversity.

There are some universal themes that come up again and again. Others capitalize on new technologies and communication methods, or are targeted at expanding Rotary’s demographic reach. Below are 10 tips from Rotarians for increasing membership:

1.Invite friends, colleagues, or neighbors to participate in one of your club's projects.

2.Keep a supply of the Start with Rotary postcards and wallet cards, and give them to potential members.

3.Encourage prospective members who live outside your geographic area to visit the RI Web site, view membership videos, and complete a prospective member form.

4.Ask your district membership chair to contact qualified candidates who have come to the district's attention through an online referral.

5.Talk with potential members about Rotary's humanitarian work, including programs like PolioPlus. Mention the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's involvement in the polio eradication effort through Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge.

6.Invite professional women in your community to one of your club meetings. Initiate projects that focus on women's issues, and invite prominent women in the community to participate, speak, or lead.

7.Maintain contact with all local alumni of Rotary's educational and service programs, and organize events for them. Work with qualified candidates to help them join your club.

8.Advertise special programs or projects on social networking sites such as Craigslist, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Orkut, and invite visitors to your club meetings and events. Learn about RI's official social networking pages.

9.Sponsor an open house (or an open meeting with a special guest) that caters to a demographic group or classification that isn't represented in the club.

10.Maintain a Web site for your club so that interested individuals can easily find out who you are, what you do, and what inspires you.

Estimados rotarios:

RI President Message

December 2009

My fellow Rotarians:

The idea of the family of Rotary is a simple one, and one that we celebrate every December during Family Month. Every Rotarian is part of the Rotary family – but our family is much larger than just our 1.2 million members. The family of Rotary includes every one of the men, women, and children who are involved in our work: the spouses and children of our members, our Rotary Foundation program participants and alumni, and all of those who are part of our programs, in the tens of thousands of Rotary communities around the world.

The youngest generation of the Rotary family is composed of our Rotaract clubs and Interact clubs, the participants in our Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program, our Ambassadorial Scholars, and our more than 8,000 Rotary Youth Exchange students every year. As in any family, our youth are our brightest promise for the future. Of course, it is my sincere wish that many of these young people go on to become Rotarians in good time. But Rotary is a part of them even today – and they are a part of us.

My wife, June, and I have been married for over 40 years, and I have been a Rotarian for nearly as long. Although women were not eligible for Rotary club membership at that time, June has been a part of the Rotary family from the day I first entered the Rotary Club of Grangemouth. There is no question that my Rotary service has demanded a great deal of both of us since then – but there can be no question that we have both reaped more than we have sown.

I believe that Rotary club membership can and should enhance our home lives and family interactions. As we work to attract more and younger qualified members, we would do well to remember that today’s young professionals are often balancing work and family responsibilities. Adding in a commitment to Rotary service should complement, never compete with, those responsibilities. By scheduling meetings outside of the workday, planning activities that involve family members, and welcoming family members whenever possible, we help to ensure that every Rotary family will feel a true part of the greater Rotary family.

Every club should strive to achieve a balanced interaction between Rotarians and their families – and the family of Rotary. Only by working together, as a family, can we ensure that the Rotary of today grows into an even stronger Rotary of tomorrow.

Financial update from the RI general secretary

Rotary International News
30 November 2009

Dear Rotarians,

I am happy to report continuing improvement in the financial picture for Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation since my last communication on 8 September. Positive market performance this fiscal year through September resulted in investment earnings of US$11 million for Rotary International and $58 million for The Rotary Foundation. We are continuing to see further improvement this quarter, though the markets remain volatile.

Many Rotarians have expressed concern over the magnitude of last year’s investment losses. Last year was truly extraordinary in that global financial markets suffered their greatest losses since the Great Depression. Nearly all asset classes (stocks, bonds, real estate, etc.), including those in which the Foundation’s assets are invested, experienced losses. The Foundation’s investment losses were very similar to those experienced by other major endowments and foundations.

RI’s reserve fund remains above mandated levels. The Foundation reserve has increased by approximately $34 million since 30 June 2009, though it stands at a negative $8 million, well below the target reserve level. Rotary’s cash flows remain positive, and we have not had to liquidate securities to operate or fund program spending this fiscal year.

Contributions to the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund dipped in the first quarter of this year, a situation that can be attributed in part to Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge, which has already passed the halfway mark. The Trustees realize that conducting multiple major fundraising initiatives simultaneously can generate donor fatigue. Yet all are extremely important efforts that cannot be delayed. Rotary must fulfill its promise of a polio-free world, but at the same time, we need to continue, and expand when possible, our worldwide educational and humanitarian efforts that are supported by the Annual Programs Fund. Fortunately, many Rotarians realize the great needs that both of these initiatives are meeting and remain generous donors to our Foundation.

Investment returns, reserve funds, and contributions are only part of our financial picture. Controlling costs remains a top priority for Rotary senior leaders and the Secretariat staff. Currently, operating expenses and staffing levels remain under our tight 2009-10 budgets for both RI and the Foundation. Expenses related to travel have been cut substantially. Many committees are meeting via teleconference and webinars, and staff travel has been reduced considerably. Your Secretariat staff and Rotary senior leaders continue to monitor spending and explore ways to further cut costs without significantly reducing service.

Based on the improvements in Rotary’s finances as summarized above, at this time the Board of Directors and Trustees have decided to

Maintain the Foundation’s three-year investment cycle and the current District Designated Fund/World Fund 50-50 SHARE ratio

Preserve District Designated Fund balances at full value and provide more flexibility for districts to use these funds

Temporarily modify Rotary’s existing investment policies to provide more flexibility in managing our investments during this market recovery

Request the Investment Advisory Committee to accelerate its review of the investment and spending policies for both the Annual Programs Fund and Permanent Fund to address liquidity needs and risk tolerance

Continue to reduce operating expenses throughout the organization

Finally, I invite you to view the 2008-09 audited financial statements for both RI and The Rotary Foundation, which have been successfully completed with unqualified opinions from our independent auditors and approved by both boards. In December and January, every club will receive a copy of the joint RI/Rotary Foundation annual report, which will also be posted on www.rotary.org. In addition to financial highlights, this publication features compelling stories and photographs that vividly illustrate the remarkable range and value of Rotarian service worldwide.

Sincerely,

Ed Futa

Foundation supports a strong Rotary family

This year marks my 50th as a Rotarian. I cannot recall whether, on the day I first joined a Rotary club, I gave any thought to what my involvement with Rotary might be in 2009-10. I am sure I never expected that Rotary would have become so much a part of the Estess household that it would feel to all of us like family.

I often talk about how The Rotary Foundation supports the entire family of Rotary. Rotary is like a family in so many ways – in the ways we lift each other up, help each other grow, and accomplish things together that we never could alone.

Through Rotary, with the help of our Foundation, we can take on challenges that no one else has the ability, or the inclination, or the organizational resources to tackle. We in Rotary share what we have in a way that no one else does – with love, with kindness, and with simple generosity. And that is why, when I was traveling with my wife, Mary, during Rotary’s centennial year, she so often said to me, “The finest people in the world must be Rotarians.”

What we have both seen in the last 50 years, over and over again, has been a pure and overwhelming desire to be of assistance – a desire that, thanks to the Foundation, is backed with financial and practical resources. Rotarians work to address needs that seem so large or so intractable that no one else will even try – or sometimes so insignificant that no one else will bother. In our Rotary family, we rise to these challenges because we know we can – with the strength of our Foundation behind us.

La Fundación promueve la familia rotaria

Diciembre de 2009

Hace cincuenta años me afilié a Rotary.
