Nueva Guia para la Planeación Estratégica en la WEB

Rotary International News
29 Diciembre 2008

New strategic planning guide available online

Rotary International News -- 29 December 2008

New this month is an online tool for clubs to create a strategic plan. The Strategic Planning Guide is available in nine languages and provides worksheets and information to help clubs set goals and develop a plan to implement them.

The process of creating a strategic plan should be run by a group of club leaders and should involve all members, including past, current, and future club leaders. The guide helps clubs create a vision of where they would like to be in three years and to develop long-range and annual goals that support that vision.

The guide also emphasizes the importance of regular evaluation of the goals and vision and adjusting the strategic plan as needed. Although this new tool was created for clubs, it can be adapted for district strategic planning. Clubs are encouraged to align their strategic plans with those of their districts and RI.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUCHAS GRACIAS,

Milqueya Portes
Gobernadora.-

New e-mail scam

Rotary International News
December 2008

There are several e-mail scams that target Rotarians.

Please be aware of the following scams:

An e-mail from "UFAAIDS" requesting personal information in exchange for a job position as a "U.S. UFAAIDS-Rotary District 8080-Donations Co-ordinator."

A request via e-mail for a $5 donation to list your Interact club on a Web site. This Web site is not affiliated or in any way associated to Rotary International.

An e-mail that claims that a Rotarian has "emerged a recipient of our Rotary International improvement Grant Programs." It goes on to say that the recipient was selected from an "exclusive" database of more than 800 million individuals and corporate bodies. The e-mail then gives a fake a batch number and contact information for a "cash prize."

Another scam e-mail claims that a deceased Rotarian has left money to the e-mail recipient to be donated to philanthropic efforts. The sender, who claims to be the executor of the will, then asks for the recipient’s personal information in order to claim the inheritance.

Another e-mail scam from a fake Rotary club claims that the recipient won a sum of US$ 700,000. The e-mail states that the winnings can't be transferred in the recipient's home country and that they must share an active bank account for deposit of "cash prize".

Rotary International does not solicit funds through e-mail, nor does it ask that personal information be updated by e-mail or other electronic means. RI encourages Rotarians and Rotary clubs to avoid becoming victims of such scams by deleting any e-mail that appears suspicious.

RI president Message

December 2008

Dear fellow Rotarians,

As a father of four and grandfather of five, I have been fortunate to have spent many years in the company of children. When raising our own children, my wife, Young, and I worked hard to give them what all children need most: a loving, safe, and stable home. Our children were our first priority, and we made sure that they always had nutritious food, appropriate clothing, quality medical care, and a good education. We knew very well how fortunate we were to be able to do this. We were grateful that we never had to say to our children, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing to eat tonight,” or “I’m sorry, but we can’t pay your school fees.”

When I was a child, Korea was a poor country, and there were many children who went to bed hungry at night and had no school to go to in the morning. As a Rotarian, I know only too well that there are still far too many children in the world without the absolute essentials: food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education. And as a Rotarian who is also a father, I consider all of the world’s children to be my responsibility.

When I see my own grandchildren – happy, healthy, and enrolled in good schools – I cannot help but think of the millions of children who do not have so many advantages. I think of the children who have too little to eat and only dirty water to drink. I think of the children who are sick with diseases that could have been prevented and those who will have nowhere safe to sleep tonight.

And I think of the children, millions of them every year, who won’t live to see their fifth birthday.

December is Family Month. It is a time to focus on our families, to involve them in our Rotary service, and to challenge ourselves to do even more for those in need. Because there are so many families and so many children waiting for our help, we, as Rotarians, cannot look away. We cannot and will not rest until all children, everywhere, have the chance for a long and healthy life. We will not rest until we Make Dreams Real for every child in every home where there is hunger, sickness, and want. As Rotarians, we can do no less.

TRF Chairman Message

December 2008

Message from the chair -- Working for peace through our Foundation

Dear family of Rotary,

During the holiday season and Family Month on the Rotary calendar, our thoughts and wishes often turn to peace on earth – a state that sometimes seems impossible to achieve. As individuals, we may feel helpless. How can one person influence the brutal course of events, some of which are taking place thousands of miles away? As Rotarians, we have the opportunity – and the power – to work for peace through our Rotary Foundation.

Our humanitarian programs are helping to overcome the greatest obstacles to peace: poverty, disease, hunger, and illiteracy. By providing access to clean water, health care, and education, Foundation-supported projects are bringing hope to people in need, and hope is a powerful deterrent to war. Our educational programs are also promoting peace by bringing together people from different countries and cultures in an environment of goodwill and international understanding.

Right now, more than 400 graduates of our Rotary Centers for International Studies are working in the areas of conflict resolution, humanitarian aid, diplomacy, and government. Each year, about 80 more Rotary Peace Fellows join their colleagues to put Rotary’s ideals into action in war zones and areas threatened by conflict. And with your support, The Rotary Foundation will continue to swell the ranks of these peacemakers.

Our Foundation offers us many reasons to believe that peace is possible, and that Rotarians can help to make it happen.
