Un Gran Ejemplo a Imitar

Dear Friends,

I would like to share this story with you. His name is Guillermo Salas and he was The Rotary Foundation GSE Team Member from District 4920 ( La Pampa and Buenos Aires , Argentina ) to District 9910 ( Northland , New Zealand ) back in 1992. Since I happened to be this GSE Team Leader, Guillermo is my friend for the last 15 years.

Two weeks ago he called on the cell phone and told me that his friends from Colorado , USA , Matthew Brown and Beth Montgomery were coming to Santa Rosa to visit him and his family for a week. Matthew is a consultant on energy and Beth is a high school teacher. Guille has been previously an American Field Service youth exchange to Illinois where he met Mat and Beth in high school. Since Guille has been Rotarian for many years (Classification, Law) he thought it would be interesting to bring his friends to our Santa Rosa RC meeting on Monday, 29 October.

I informed him that I have attend the last 2007 COL in Chicago where the Council have decided a new status or TRF Alumni and since 1 July he has the right to attend any Rotary Club meeting as a visitor as stated in Rotary Code of Policies 17.080.4 (TRF Alumni as Guests): "Clubs are encouraged to welcome Rotary Foundation alumni as guests at their meetings, particularly alumni who have recently moved to the locality of the club. The alumni will be expected to pay the same costs of attendance as paid by visiting Rotarians." (June 2007 Mtg., Bd. Dec. 231)

Guillermo (first from left in the picture) was impressed by his new discovery and he came to our meeting with his friends Beth and Mat (second and fifth). When our Club President Regina Alfonso (center in the picture), also TRF Alumni, found out they were going to attend the meeting and they spoke Spanish, she offered them the program and we have an outstanding speech on eolic and bio-energy. When I (forth from left in the picture) read the RCP article before introducing Guillermo, all club members where surprised with this new policy and with the idea that our Rotary Club was certainly one of the first clubs in the Rotary World to be visited by an alumnus as guest. To be consistent with this new honor, Guille paid the meal cost.

I wonder how many Alumni will visit our Rotary Club meetings in the future. I am sure they will do so as soon as we Rotarians advise them about this new policy.

Estimados amigos

Quiero compartir esta historia con ustedes. Su nombre es Guillermo Salas y fue Miembro de Equipo IGE (Intercambio de Grupos de Estudio) del Distrito 4920 al Distrito 9910, Nueva Zelanda, en 1992. Desde que fui el líder del grupo, hace 15 años, Guillermo es mi amigo.

Hace dos semanas llamó y me comentó que sus amigos de Colorado, Estados Unidos, Mathew Brown y Beth Montgomery llegarían a Santa Rosa para visitarlo por una semana. Mathew es un especialista en energía y Beth es profesora. Guillermo fue estudiante de intercambio por ASF en Illinois, donde conoció a Mathew y Beth. Guille fue rotario durante varios años y le pareció oportuno traer a sus amigos a la reunión del Club Rotario Santa Rosa el lunes 29 de octubre.

Le informé que, en ocasión de haber asistido al último COL (Consejo de Legislación) 2007, en Chicago, se resolvió que a partir del 1 de julio, los Ex Becarios de LFR, tienen el derecho de asistir a las reuniones de los clubes rotarios como visitantes, de acuerdo a lo establecido en el “Rotary Code of Policy” 17.080.4 (Ex Becarios de LFR como visita): "Se alienta a los Clubes Rotarios a recibir a los Ex Becarios de LFR como visita/invitado a las reuniones, particularmente a los Ex Becarios que recientemente se hayan radicado en la localidad. Se espera que el Ex Becario abone el importe establecido para los rotarios visitantes."(June 2007 Mtg., Bd. Dec. 231)

Guillero (primero desde la izquierda en la fotografía) se mostró impresionado por la nueva disposición y vino a nuestra reunión con sus amigos Beth and Mat (segundo y quinto). Cuando nuestra presidenta del club Regina Alfonso (en el centro de la foto), también Ex Becaria de LFR, se enteró que hablaban castellano, les ofreció el programa y tuvimos una sobresaliente conferencia sobre energía eólica y bioenergía. Cuando personalmente (cuarto desde la izquierda en la foto) leí en la reunión el artículo del Código de Normas de Rotary entres de presentar a Guillermo, todos los presentes se sorprendieron con esta nueva disposicióny con la idea que nuestro club rotario era por cierto uno de los primeros en el mundo de Rotary en ser vistado por un ex becario como visitante. Para ser consistente con la nueva disposición, Guillermo abonó su cena.

Me pregunto ¿Cuántos Ex Becarios nos vistarán en nuestras reuniones ordinarias en el futuro? Estoy seguro que ello ocurrirá en tanto y en cuanto los rotarios les informemos respecto de esta nueva política de RI.
